How to love your job

How to love your job

You might not want to admit this out loud that you don’t like your job. And that can be pretty scary. After all, you know there are people who would gladly take your place. Yet being miserable day in and day out isn’t good either for your mind and body.

Here’s the secret to living with a job you’re not loving: If you can’t change your job, change your attitude and change it so much your job becomes appealing. Stimulating. Even pleasurable.

    • Realize that your job does not define you, but how you do it does. There’s a lot to be said for attitude, more than will fit here. Any job can be done well, done with compassion, done with care. Your attitude at work and the way you treat people — even your mood — does not go unnoticed. They have a profound influence on the people you work with. There are times when you can’t control your situation, but you can always choose how you live in it.
    • Find the significance in what you do. This may require you to think big, but it can be done. Take some time to really think about what you do. Do you provide an essential service? Do you get to see the finished product? Do you give direction that gets things done? Then ask yourself “how is this job done differently because I am doing it?” Perspective plays a huge role in personal satisfaction and sense of well being. Try to remember why you took the job in the first place. If it was only going to be “for now” are you actively looking for other work?
    • Set Goals That Are Within Your Control. Be realistic about your personal situation and what is necessary for moving forward. The job you hate right now might be a necessity for what lies ahead, but it’s important to make sure that you’re not taking shortcuts. Instead of trying to “wow” your boss with tough promises to keep, stick to working hard and accomplishing what’s in your power to perform. Doing this consistently is vastly more impressive.
  • Learn As Much As Possible. Speaking of learning, one of the best ways to break the monotony of your job is by training yourself to do more than what is required of you. For some jobs, this is actually the only way for you to get promoted at all, as it is the type of ambition that supervisors are looking for.
  • Be Grateful That You Have a Job. Always remember that some people would beg to have your job, so don’t take it for granted. Sure, it may not be perfect or what you want to do for the rest of your life, but focus on what you can do in the present to make your job matter.

And here are a few motivational quotes which will make you love your work even more:

  • “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”-Steve Jobs.
  • “The secret of joy in work is contained in one word – excellence. To know how to do something well is to enjoy it.” -Pearl S. Buck
  • “Just don’t give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there is love and inspiration, I don’t think you can go wrong.” – Ella Fitzgerald
